1. Sun audit, soil test and grass selection
We measure the yard, count actual sun hours under the canopy at three points in the day, check irrigation coverage and pull a soil sample. Deep shade gets Palmetto, CitraBlue or Zeon Zoysia. Open sun and a low-input owner gets centipede. Full sun with traffic gets Bermuda. Big rural lots get Bahia. You get a firm number, not a range.

2. Strip the old lawn and fix the grade
We cut out the old grass and weed mat with a sod cutter and haul it off, then set the grade so water leaves the slab at roughly a quarter inch per foot. On the clay slopes that define half of Leon County that also means cutting swales and breaking up the sheet flow that has been carving a rut across the yard every summer.

3. Break the clay, amend and install
Compacted red clay gets ripped or tilled to four inches, then compost goes in at a rate that actually changes the structure, plus dolomitic lime if the soil report calls for it. The bed is raked smooth, sod goes down tight in a running-bond pattern with staggered seams, and a water-filled roller presses the roots into soil contact.
