Tallahassee Elite Sod & Turf provides professional bahia sod in Tallahassee, FL for residential and commercial properties across the Florida Big Bend. Bahia sod is the honest answer for a big North Florida lot where the goal is green ground cover rather than a showpiece, and it is the cheapest grass per square foot we install. Bahiagrass has a deep, coarse root system that reaches water the other lawn grasses cannot, needs almost no fertilizer, tolerates our acidic clay without amendment, and survives on rainfall alone in a normal year — which on a two-acre yard with no irrigation is not a compromise, it is the only thing that works. We install Argentine and Pensacola. Argentine has a wider, denser leaf and a better appearance under mowing, so it is the one we use on anything that reads as a lawn: front yards on rural frontage out toward Fort Braden and Miccosukee, church grounds, large corner lots. Pensacola is finer, more cold hardy and more common on roadsides and pasture, and it is the better pick where the priority is erosion control on a clay bank or stabilising a big open area that nobody plans to fuss over. Both were selected for exactly the conditions the Big Bend offers, and both have been growing here since long before anyone was selling premium turf. Now the honest downsides, because Bahia gets oversold as a miracle and it is not one. It produces tall, forked seed heads on wiry stems from late spring into fall, and they grow back within days of mowing, so a Bahia lawn kept looking tidy is mowed more often than a centipede lawn, not less. Its colour is a lighter, yellower green than St. Augustine or Zoysia and it never has the density of a good turf lawn — up close it looks like what it is, a pasture grass doing yard work. It has poor shade tolerance, worse than centipede, so it is useless under the canopy that covers most of the older parts of town. It goes off-colour in high pH soil and it does not compete well against weeds in an irrigated, fertilized setting, which is a strange sentence until you realise that Bahia's advantage is precisely that it wins where nothing is being pampered. Mole crickets are the pest that matters. Tawny and southern mole crickets tunnel through Bahia root zones across the Florida Panhandle and Big Bend, loosening the surface until a footprint sinks and the turf pulls up like carpet. They are best treated in early summer when the nymphs are small, and treating in October when the damage is obvious mostly wastes money. We time it properly and we tell you which months matter. Install is straightforward and fast, which is part of the appeal — strip, grade, break the surface crust, lay tight seams, roll, water. Bahia is also sold widely as seed and on a large enough area seeding can be the cheaper route, so if you have three acres, patience and no deadline, we will tell you that instead of selling you forty pallets. If you want the ground covered before the next rain moves the topsoil down the slope, sod is worth the difference.

Materials, equipment and how we do bahia sod
The difference between bahia sod that lasts and bahia sod that gets redone in three years is almost always preparation and materials, not the finish you see on day one. We work with Floratam St. Augustine sod, Palmetto St. Augustine, CitraBlue St. Augustine, Bitterblue St. Augustine, spec them to the job instead of to the invoice, and write the material grades into the free estimate so you know exactly what you are buying.
Every Tallahassee job runs the same way: site walk and measurements, written scope and fixed price, protection of the surrounding area, then the work itself with a daily clean-up. 15+ years of sod installation work in the Florida Big Bend means we have already met whatever your property is going to throw at us — awkward access, older construction, an HOA with opinions.
