Tallahassee Elite Sod & Turf provides professional land grading & erosion control in Tallahassee, FL for residential and commercial properties across the Florida Big Bend. Land grading and erosion control is the part of a Tallahassee lawn nobody sees and everything depends on, because this is not flat Florida. We laser-grade yards to a fall of roughly a quarter inch per foot away from the slab, cut swales that carry water off a clay bank instead of down the middle of it, and stabilise slopes before any sod is ordered — standing water and moving water both destroy new turf, and the Red Hills give you plenty of each. The terrain is the whole story. Tallahassee sits at the southern end of a genuinely hilly region by Florida standards, with elevations running from near sea level to just over 200 feet inside the city, and a great many yards here have real fall across them. Combine that with red clay, which absorbs very little and sheds almost everything, and a summer that delivers over seven inches of rain in each of June, July and August, and you get the two failure patterns we see constantly: a rut cut down a back slope that gets deeper every storm, and a low corner that holds water for two days and rots whatever was planted in it. Neither is a grass problem. We start with a laser level rather than an opinion. Shooting the site gives actual elevations at the slab, the property line, the walks and the low spots, and from that we can say whether the answer is a cut-and-fill regrade, a shallow swale routing water to the street or a side yard, a French drain, a terrace, or some combination. Guessing with a rake and a good eye works on a small flat back yard and fails on anything with a grade on it. On slopes we design for velocity, not just direction. Water moving fast down a bare clay bank will carve a channel through fresh sod before the roots have knitted, so the plan usually involves flattening the fall in stages, adding a diversion swale near the top, and holding the surface with erosion blanket or matting until the turf has taken. Where a bank is too steep to mow safely we would rather put in a planted or terraced solution than sell you grass that somebody has to ride a mower sideways across for the next fifteen years. Cut and fill is done with the soil profile in mind. Importing fill onto existing clay creates a textural boundary that roots will not cross and water will not either, so where we add material we scarify and blend rather than stack. Where we cut, we make sure we are not exposing raw subsoil and then asking new sod to live in it, which is why grading and soil amendment are quoted together on nearly every job. We also handle finish grading behind new construction, where the builder's rough grade is almost never what a landscape needs and the topsoil is generally in a pile behind the garage. And we level established lawns gone bumpy from fire ant mounds, settled utility trenches, old stump holes and mole cricket activity. On a lawn with sound grass, that is often a sand topdressing and roll program over two or three visits rather than a tear-out, which is cheaper and keeps your existing turf. We will tell you which category you are in, because not every uneven yard needs rebuilding.

Materials, equipment and how we do land grading & erosion control
The difference between land grading & erosion control that lasts and land grading & erosion control that gets redone in three years is almost always preparation and materials, not the finish you see on day one. We work with Floratam St. Augustine sod, Palmetto St. Augustine, CitraBlue St. Augustine, Bitterblue St. Augustine, spec them to the job instead of to the invoice, and write the material grades into the free estimate so you know exactly what you are buying.
Every Tallahassee job runs the same way: site walk and measurements, written scope and fixed price, protection of the surrounding area, then the work itself with a daily clean-up. 15+ years of sod installation work in the Florida Big Bend means we have already met whatever your property is going to throw at us — awkward access, older construction, an HOA with opinions.
