CitraBlue is the newer University of Florida release, darker blue-green, semi-dwarf, with better shade and disease tolerance than Floratam, and it is worth the premium on a high-visibility front lawn. Bitterblue is the old Florida selection people still ask for by name in the older neighborhoods around Los Robles and Betton Hills, and it earns that loyalty with a fine blade and genuine shade and cold tolerance. Because St. Augustine spreads only by above-ground stolons and is never sold as seed, the install has to be tight: staggered running-bond seams, no gaps at the edges, and a water-filled roller run over the whole lawn so the stolons are pressed into soil instead of sitting on air. Gaps here do not fill in politely, they fill in with Florida betony and dollarweed. The two things that kill new St. Augustine in Tallahassee are not the two that kill it in the rest of Florida. First is water on clay. Most watering guidance for Florida lawns was written for sand, and running that schedule on Red Hills clay under a shade canopy leaves the top four inches saturated and airless. Roots stall, then large patch arrives in the first cool damp spell of October. We set the controller conservatively from day one and taper faster than you would expect. Second is pH. Our soils are acidic, commonly in the 5s, and St. Augustine wants roughly 6.0 to 7.0, so the correction here is dolomitic lime — the exact opposite of the sulfur every Texas and Arizona lawn guide recommends. Chinch bugs are the main insect and they work the hottest, driest strip along the driveway. Gray leaf spot follows heavy nitrogen in July humidity. We check both on the follow-up visit. One honest limit: below about four hours of filtered sun a day, no St. Augustine cultivar holds, and we will tell you that before you spend the money rather than after. Under a dense live oak the right answer is mulch, liriope or a shade bed, and we would rather design that than sell you a pallet of grass that has already lost. Pallets run roughly 400 to 500 square feet, cut fresh and installed within about 24 hours of harvest.
