Tallahassee St. Augustine Sod Residential & Commercial

St. Augustine Sod in Tallahassee, FL

Tallahassee Elite Sod & Turf provides professional st. augustine sod in Tallahassee, FL for residential and commercial properties across the Florida Big Bend. St. Augustine sod is the default Tallahassee lawn, and under the live oaks and southern magnolias that shade most of this town it is usually the only warm-season grass with a real chance. We install Floratam, Palmetto, CitraBlue and Bitterblue across Leon County, and those four are not interchangeable no matter what the sign on the pallet at the garden center says. Floratam came out of the joint University of Florida and Texas A&M program and is still the most planted St. Augustine in the state. It grows fastest, loves open sun, and is the least shade tolerant and least cold hardy of the group — which matters here in a way it does not in Ocala, because our January average low is around 40 degrees and this city has recorded 2 below zero. On a wide sunny front yard in Southwood it is a perfectly good buy. Under a canopy on the north side of Midtown it is a slow, expensive mistake. Palmetto is semi-dwarf, finer bladed, noticeably better in filtered shade and better in cold, and it is the variety we put down most often north of I-10. CitraBlue is the newer University of Florida release, darker blue-green, semi-dwarf, with better shade and disease tolerance than Floratam, and it is worth the premium on a high-visibility front lawn. Bitterblue is the old Florida selection people still ask for by name in the older neighborhoods around Los Robles and Betton Hills, and it earns that loyalty with a fine blade and genuine shade and cold tolerance. Because St. Augustine spreads only by above-ground stolons and is never sold as seed, the install has to be tight: staggered running-bond seams, no gaps at the edges, and a water-filled roller run over the whole lawn so the stolons are pressed into soil instead of sitting on air. Gaps here do not fill in politely, they fill in with Florida betony and dollarweed. The two things that kill new St. Augustine in Tallahassee are not the two that kill it in the rest of Florida. First is water on clay. Most watering guidance for Florida lawns was written for sand, and running that schedule on Red Hills clay under a shade canopy leaves the top four inches saturated and airless. Roots stall, then large patch arrives in the first cool damp spell of October. We set the controller conservatively from day one and taper faster than you would expect. Second is pH. Our soils are acidic, commonly in the 5s, and St. Augustine wants roughly 6.0 to 7.0, so the correction here is dolomitic lime — the exact opposite of the sulfur every Texas and Arizona lawn guide recommends. Chinch bugs are the main insect and they work the hottest, driest strip along the driveway. Gray leaf spot follows heavy nitrogen in July humidity. We check both on the follow-up visit. One honest limit: below about four hours of filtered sun a day, no St. Augustine cultivar holds, and we will tell you that before you spend the money rather than after. Under a dense live oak the right answer is mulch, liriope or a shade bed, and we would rather design that than sell you a pallet of grass that has already lost. Pallets run roughly 400 to 500 square feet, cut fresh and installed within about 24 hours of harvest.

With 15+ years of experience, our licensed and insured team brings the right materials and equipment to every job — Floratam St. Augustine sod, Palmetto St. Augustine, CitraBlue St. Augustine, Bitterblue St. Augustine, TifBlair centipedegrass, Empire Zoysia — and backs the work with a written workmanship warranty. Materials, equipment and how we do st. augustine sod

The difference between st. augustine sod that lasts and st. augustine sod that gets redone in three years is almost always preparation and materials, not the finish you see on day one. We work with Floratam St. Augustine sod, Palmetto St. Augustine, CitraBlue St. Augustine, Bitterblue St. Augustine, spec them to the job instead of to the invoice, and write the material grades into the free estimate so you know exactly what you are buying.

Every Tallahassee job runs the same way: site walk and measurements, written scope and fixed price, protection of the surrounding area, then the work itself with a daily clean-up. 15+ years of sod installation work in the Florida Big Bend means we have already met whatever your property is going to throw at us — awkward access, older construction, an HOA with opinions.

St. Augustine Sod in Tallahassee: Common Questions

How much does st. augustine sod cost in Tallahassee, FL?

It comes down to square footage, access, the condition of what is already there, and the materials you choose — Floratam St. Augustine sod, Palmetto St. Augustine, CitraBlue St. Augustine. We do not price a job off a phone call and a guess. We measure on site and hand you an itemized free estimate with the scope written out, so you can compare it line by line against anyone else's number.

How long does a st. augustine sod job take?

Most residential st. augustine sod work in Tallahassee runs from a single day to about a week once materials are on site. Larger commercial jobs get phased so the property keeps operating. Weather, permit review and material lead times are the usual reasons a date moves, and you hear about those from us before the crew starts, not after.

Do you pull permits and handle inspections in Tallahassee?

Yes, on any work that needs one. We file with the Tallahassee building department, schedule the inspection and stay on site for it. Skipping a permit is how property owners end up paying twice — once for the work, and again when it fails at resale or an insurance claim.

Is Tallahassee Elite Sod & Turf licensed and insured?

Licensed landscape contractor, FDACS limited certification for urban landscape commercial fertilizer application and a Chapter 482 lawn and ornamental license on staff. Fully insured and bonded. Florida Nursery, Growers and Landscape Association. Every st. augustine sod job carries 30-day sod establishment guarantee, and we have been doing this in the Florida Big Bend for 15+ years. Ask any contractor for those four things in writing before you sign — the ones who hesitate are telling you something.

Do you take commercial sod installation work as well as residential?

Both. Tallahassee Elite Sod & Turf runs residential st. augustine sod across Tallahassee neighborhoods and commercial work for offices, retail, restaurants, apartment complexes and HOA properties throughout the Florida Big Bend. Commercial jobs get phased scheduling and off-hours crews so tenants and customers are not shut out while the work happens.
