Tallahassee Elite Sod & Turf provides professional sports field & athletic turf in Tallahassee, FL for residential and commercial properties across the Florida Big Bend. Sports field turf is judged on two things: whether it drains and whether the surface is true. We build and renovate soccer pitches, football and multi-use fields, baseball and softball outfields and practice areas across the Big Bend, almost always on hybrid Bermuda, laser-graded so water leaves the field instead of standing in the middle of it. Drainage carries extra weight here because of what is under the grass. A field built on undisturbed Red Hills clay will hold water for two days after a summer storm no matter how good the grade is, and in a region averaging around 59 inches of rain a year with seven-inch months in midsummer, that means cancelled fixtures and a dead centre circle. The real fix on a clay site is usually sand-capping or a drain tile grid, not more sod, and we will say so before anyone spends money twice. Fields below the Cody Scarp, out toward Woodville and Wakulla County, sit on sand and have the opposite problem — they drain beautifully and dry out fast, so irrigation design and root-zone organic matter matter more than tile. Cultivar choice reflects the winters. Tifway 419 remains the standard specification for its density, fine leaf and recovery from goalmouth punishment. TifTuf is what we build where irrigation is limited, because it holds colour under water stress longer. Latitude 36 is the one we push for programs whose season starts early in spring, since it came out of the Oklahoma State cold-tolerance work and greens up sooner after a North Florida winter than the Georgia-bred lines do. Overseeding with perennial ryegrass is standard practice for winter play here, and we will build it into the calendar rather than pretending Bermuda stays green in January. Grade is where fields are won. We laser-grade to a planar surface with either a centre crown or a directional fall depending on the sport and the site, because a low spot in the middle of a pitch is unplayable for two days after every storm and the turf there dies first. Renovation scopes typically include stripping worn areas, killing invaded common Bermuda, bahiagrass and dallisgrass, re-establishing grade, topdressing with washed sand, and reinstalling with big-roll sod where access allows. Big roll gives fewer seams and a faster, more even grow-in than slab sod, and on a playing surface the seams show up in how the ball behaves. Mid-season work is its own discipline. We handle goalmouth and infield-arc repairs, aeration and topdressing programs to fight the compaction that clay and cleats produce together, and fertility schedules written around your play calendar rather than a generic spring and fall application. Heavy nitrogen in October on a Bermuda field in this climate is a reliable way to start the spring season looking rough. For schools and leagues we work around practices and game days, keep the site fenced and clean during install, and give a realistic grow-in window rather than an optimistic one. A June install on Tifway 419 with working irrigation is playable far sooner than the same install in November, when soil temperatures here have already dropped below what Bermuda needs to root. We would rather build the schedule around the agronomy than promise a date the grass cannot keep.

Materials, equipment and how we do sports field & athletic turf
The difference between sports field & athletic turf that lasts and sports field & athletic turf that gets redone in three years is almost always preparation and materials, not the finish you see on day one. We work with Floratam St. Augustine sod, Palmetto St. Augustine, CitraBlue St. Augustine, Bitterblue St. Augustine, spec them to the job instead of to the invoice, and write the material grades into the free estimate so you know exactly what you are buying.
Every Tallahassee job runs the same way: site walk and measurements, written scope and fixed price, protection of the surrounding area, then the work itself with a daily clean-up. 15+ years of sod installation work in the Florida Big Bend means we have already met whatever your property is going to throw at us — awkward access, older construction, an HOA with opinions.
