Compost goes in at a rate that genuinely changes soil structure — several cubic yards per thousand square feet worked into the top four inches — not the decorative dusting that makes a yard look freshly done and changes nothing. On heavy clay we blend coarse sand along with the compost rather than layering it, since a sand layer sitting on clay creates a perched water table and makes drainage worse rather than better. Lime goes in where the soil report and buffering capacity justify it, at a rate the report supports, and it goes in tilled rather than surface-spread because lime moves through soil at a genuinely glacial pace. Gypsum goes in where sodium or calcium deficiency is the issue rather than pH — a completely different test and a completely different bag, and plenty of people buy the wrong one on the strength of a video. Grass species change the target. St. Augustine, Zoysia and Bermuda all want a pH nearer 6.0 to 7.0, so they benefit from lime on a typical Leon County lot. Centipedegrass wants 5.0 to 6.0 and will go chlorotic and start declining if you lime it up into the range the others prefer. That single fact is behind an enormous number of failed centipede lawns in North Florida, and it is why we ask what grass is going down before we write an amendment plan rather than after.
