The southern chinch bug is the most destructive insect on St. Augustine in Florida, and because the damage looks exactly like drought stress, most people water harder and make it worse — which on Tallahassee clay adds a root-rotting problem to the insect problem they already had. The insect feeds on the stolons and injects a toxin as it goes, so the grass wilts, yellows and dies while the soil underneath is perfectly moist. Populations build fast in a Big Bend summer, and a patch the size of a doormat in June can take out a third of a front yard by August. The confirmation test costs nothing and you can do it yourself. Cut both ends out of a coffee can, push it two inches into the turf at the edge of the damage where the grass is still partly green, fill it with water and wait a few minutes. Chinch bugs float. Small dark insects with white wing markings on the surface, and you have your answer. Treatment is the easy half. The part that matters is why it happened, because chinch bugs favour lawns with a thatch layer, a mow height that is too low, and hot dry edges, and all three are fixable. We treat, then correct the conditions, then check the same strip on the follow-up rather than assuming it worked. Chinch bugs are not the only thing out here, and the local cast is a bit different from South Florida's. Mole crickets tunnel through Bahia and Bermuda root zones until the surface loosens and turf lifts like carpet, and they are worth treating in early summer when the nymphs are small rather than in October when the damage is finally obvious. Two-lined spittlebug is the centipede and Zoysia pest people rarely name correctly, showing up as stippled, purple-streaked blades in thatchy mid-summer lawns. Tropical sod webworm strips leaf tissue in late summer and leaves ragged notched blades with small green pellets in the thatch. Fall armyworms can move across a lawn as a visible front and take it down in about two days. White grubs chew roots until sod lifts off the soil, and they usually announce themselves as an armadillo or raccoon problem before anyone notices the grass. Fire ants are their own program. Disease is the other half of the diagnosis and it is easy to confuse with insect damage. Large patch hits St. Augustine, Zoysia and centipede in cool damp weather as expanding circles with an orange margin, and this climate hands it a long window every autumn and spring. Gray leaf spot follows heavy nitrogen on St. Augustine in July humidity. Take-all root rot thins turf while the roots go short and dark, usually on a lawn already under stress. Centipedegrass decline is a management failure rather than a pathogen. None of those respond to an insecticide, which is why we diagnose before we spray. Spraying a fungicide at an insect problem is common, expensive and completely useless.
